The Minister in the Presidency Ms Maike Nkoana Mashabane launched the 2019 Women’s month programme under the theme of 25 years of democracy: growing South Africa together for women emancipation. The event took place on Wednesday morning at the Sheraton Hotel, in Pretoria.
The visitors who were predominantly development partners were treated to breaksfast, with the occasion serving as preparation ahead of the women’s month, with the intent to recognize thought leaders and development partners driving the socio-economic empowerment of women.
United Nations’ Resident Coordinator. Ms Nardos Bekele-Thomas said that more attention needs to be given to disabled women. She challenged stakeholders to engage in more action as partaking in dialogues alone without proper follow up can never be enough.
The European Union Ambassador, Paul de Luzenberger also requested for more involvement to be done to put an end to the scourge of gender based violence against women and women discrimination. He said that the European Union is already looking to extend its arms to further support the the course against the ordeals faced by these women.
The Minster said that her newly expanded department wishes to implement more women independency in the next upcoming years of democracy. Adding that more Programmes would be held under the hash tag #WhatWomenWant in celebration of women’s month.
Mashabane said that it was encouraging to know that they have got partners that are willing to collaborate in the women liberation for the next 5 years and they would also be implementing programme for younger women.
