In the ongoing implementation of the multi-disciplinary intervention at the airport, a multi-disciplinary task team was established to fight crime at the airport and keep it safe.
A 23 year old suspect is appearing in the Kempton Park Magistrates’s court tomorrow, 04 April 2019 on charges of possession and dealing in drugs after he was arrested yesterday with cocaine worth an estimated ±R1.5 million at O R Tambo International Airport.
The suspect was arrested during a routine search by members of the multi-disciplinary narcotics team. The suspect was stopped and his checked-in luggage searched after he disembarked a flight from Sao Paolo. The officials discovered drugs, suspected to be cocaine, in his luggage. The suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of ±R1 522 500-00 was confiscated.
Another suspect, 24 years old Dimitri Keller appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s court on Friday, 29 March 2019 after he was arrested on Wednesday, 27 March 2019 attempting to smuggle suspected drugs on board a flight to Frankfurt (45kg suspected Khat worth an estimated ±R900 000.00). The suspect was arrested by the alert members of the narcotics team after searching his check-in luggage. A case of possession and dealing in drugs was postponed to the 30 July 2019 for further investigation. The suspect was not granted bail and remains in custody.
High levels of collaboration between stakeholders at the airport have once again paid off. There have been breakthroughs made as a result of the on-going integrated multi-disciplinary proactive fight against crime at the O R Tambo International Airport, especially the proliferation of drugs coming into and through the port.
